Science and Literacy Achievement
Raising the Bar and Narrowing the Gap. Since 2004 G&A has provided technical assistance and evaluation to San Francisco Unified School District in their elementary science partnership grant, CaMSP WISE. The model of intensive professional development provided standards-based content knowledge by partner institutions, including San Francisco State, City College of San Francisco, and the California Academy of Science. This was followed by in-classroom support by district coaches. Within four years, 5th grade students in WISE classrooms had drastically improved performance in Science from 40% proficient in 2004 to 60% proficient in 2008. In 2004, one in 10 African American students of WISE classroom teachers achieved proficiency in science, by 2008, that number was 1 in 4. In 2004, 1 in 4 Latino students achieved proficiency and by 2008, more than 1 in 3 students accomplished this goal. Based on the success of this grant, SFUSD was awarded a three-year research grant to continue the program.
