Yu Linda Song, EdM, Associate



Ms. Song has more than four years of experience as a classroom teacher in urban communities in Massachusetts and California. Most recently she taught at a BASRC school in Fremont, California. She received a master’s degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education where she focused on Administration, Planning and Social Policy and Teaching and Learning. She also holds a BA in Political Science from Wellesley College. While teaching in Fremont, Ms. Song was one of five teachers to receive the NUMMI Excellence in Teaching Award in 1999-2000. Ms. Song also developed innovative outreach strategies for parents that included offering literacy workshops for parents, developing a monthly curriculum newsletter and implementing a system of student-led conferences. Ms. Song is familiar with research-based literacy practices and standards-based instruction. Ms. Song is also very familiar with California school legislation having supervised the development of School Accountability Report Cards for several districts throughout the state in her prior role as Senior Project Manager at School Wise Press. Ms. Song has also written parenting and academic tips for eSCORE.com. Ms. Song serves as an after-school program curriculum consultant and contributes to educational websites.

After joining G&A in 2001, Ms. Song worked as part of external evaluation teams for the II/USP and HPSG process at four Bay Area schools. Ms. Song has also participated in researching and writing CSRD grants. As an associate at G&A, she conducts needs assessments, facilitates meetings with staff to develop plans for school improvement, and analyzes student performance data. Ms. Song coached three schools in Oakland Unified on using assessment data to inform instruction, preparing and planning for the statewide writing test in 4th grade, setting up a room parent system and focusing school resources on student achievement. For two years, Ms. Song served as an Open Court instructional coach in Oakland where she developed a wide range of workshops both for site coaches and for teachers. She also developed a series of parent newsletters for every grade level and every unit in Open Court that were designed to help parents support instruction at home. In her spare time Ms. Song serves on the Advisory Board of School Wise Press, an educational publishing company and Wellesley College’s Bay Area Alumnae Board. She also continues to train volunteer tutors for HEROES (Helpers Engaged in Reaching Oakland’s Excelling Schools) by familiarizing the volunteers with the district-adopted Open Court Curriculum, student achievement needs, and tutoring tips. She is currently living in Seattle and only works with G&A on special projects where she can complete the work from home or that only require short visits to the Bay Area.
