
Mr. Schipper has 10 years of experience working with students and teachers at low-performing schools in the Bay Area. He is the founder and former school director of KIPP Bridge College Preparatory School, located on the campus of Lowell Middle School in West Oakland. Mr. Schipper worked closely with OUSD, Oakland Community Organizations (OCO) and the Bay Area Coalition for Equitable Schools (BayCES) to open KIPP as a small autonomous school. As director, he guided KIPP through the start-up process and first year of school operations. As a Project SEED math specialist for five years, Mr. Schipper worked in more than 20 West Contra Costa County and OUSD elementary schools, providing staff development, coaching, and training. He holds a BA in Mathematics and a BA in Economics from Claremont McKenna College and an MA in Public Policy from Princeton University.
Since joining G&A in January 2005, Mr. Schipper has served as a curriculum math coach, leading math staff development efforts at six OUSD elementary schools. He has also been deeply involved in the research and development of a new non-profit that is emerging from G&A’s work in education, Gibson Learning Communities. In this context, he has visited exemplary school sites, researched curriculum alternatives, and participated in ongoing design team meetings with others from the G&A Education Team.
